Bloom Day - January 2011

There are a still a few blooms either hardy enough or foolish enough to show their faces during the cold days of January.

Justicia, Tecomaria
Gamolepis, Russelia
Peach, Malvaviscus
Oncidium, Poinsettia

Bromeliads always make a reliable showing:

Ae. weilbachii, Ae. Royal Wine
Bill. Poquito Mas, Bill. Luna Blanca
Bill. Foster's Striate, Canistropsis billbergioides

... and then there are the plants that produce colorful fruits and berries, trying to be as showy as the flowers.

Mandarins, Kumquats
Pyracantha, Ardisia
Ilex East Palatka, Ilex vomitoria

Such a wonderful selection of winter blooms. I recognise the Justicia, what we call Jacobinia; the Russelia and the Malvaviscus. All these grow in my garden as well and they're blooming right now. Your Poinsettia is just beautiful too!

Many of these flowers are blooming in my garden too. I admire your fruit trees. Mine are all taking it easy and relaxing.

No bloom here inside or outside (too much snow), but I enjoyed yours.

My malvaviscus finally stopped blooming and decided to rest after our latest freeze. I see yours is still going strong. You have a lovely collection of January blooms.

We used to visit in-laws in Florida in January or February. It was always a terrific boost after a few months of cold and snow, and spring followed quickly when we returned home. My in-laws moved north, so we no longer see Florida flowers in winter. Thanks for the tease!

Oh, I can only dream of such colour outdoors, but I have lots going on indoors...feeling warmer, just looking at yours, though.

Hi Jim, i have an Ardisia on my office window sill, a birthday present to me with lots of berries. Then i just water it or prune the apical shoot to enhance sideshoots. However, it did not flower at all in 2 yrs. I thought maybe it just flower in cold temps, so ours maybe allowed to flower in cold areas and brought down to the lowlands to sell. I've read in some US blogs that they are a bit invasive when planted on the ground. I also have some seedlings already from the first berries.

I'm jealous! Such beautiful colors. All I get to see this time of year are dead trees and white snow. Thanks for giving me something to look forward to!
